The Sun Rises on Us All
Plot
The Sun Rises on Us All is set in Guangdong province, in southern China. Meiyun is in her mid-thirties and works at a mall boutique in Guangzhou. Part of the job is hosting sales livestreams on Douyin, China's version of TikTok, always with a smile. Early on she gets an ultrasound and learns she is pregnant.
Her life seems to be on track. Meiyun is seeing Qifeng, a married man with a young child. But the past comes back in the shape of Baoshu, her former partner. The two split up after an accident seven years earlier and went their separate ways.
Now Baoshu has stomach cancer and is stuck in bed, and Meiyun is the one who ends up caring for him. He reminds her of everything she tried to leave behind when she moved to the city. Caught between the two men, and with neither of them aware of the pregnancy, she has to face secrets that had stayed buried. Cai Shangjun films this triangle patiently, in no rush to explain.
