The 17th century, at the end of the Thirty Years' War. A former soldier arrives in a remote Protestant village and claims to be the missing heir to an abandoned estate. Nobody there knows the truth: Rose (Sandra Hüller) is a woman who has spent years living as a man. In the war, she took on the identity of a fellow soldier who died.
Rose gets the farm running again and slowly earns the community's respect. It helps a lot the day she shoots a bear that was threatening a villager. To expand, Rose needs more land and goes to a powerful local farmer. He's willing to deal, on one condition: Rose has to marry Suzanna (Caro Braun), his eldest daughter.
Rose is the third feature from Austrian director Markus Schleinzer, who wrote the script with Alexander Brom. The lead character draws on documented accounts of women who disguised themselves as men in European history.
