Amanda (Juliette Binoche) is a middle-aged university professor in Newcastle, England. Her mother, Leslie (Anna Calder-Marshall), has advanced dementia and lives with her husband, Martin (Tom Courtenay), Amanda's stepfather. Caring for her mother is already hard. It gets much worse the day Amanda finds Martin with Leslie and decides to call the police.
From then on, everything lands on her. Amanda takes over her parents' household, follows a court case and looks for a care home for her mother. Every choice weighs on her, because it involves people she loves who can no longer speak for themselves.
Queen at Sea is written, directed and edited by Lance Hammer. It's his second feature, nearly 18 years after Ballast in 2008. In between, Hammer worked mostly as an academic. The film was shot on 35mm by cinematographer Adolpho Veloso.
