La grazia follows Mariano De Santis, president of Italy. A devout Catholic and a lifelong jurist, he is entering the so-called white semester, the last six months of his term. It should be a time to slow down. It is not.
Two decisions land on his desk at once. The first is a bill legalizing euthanasia that is waiting for his signature. The second is a pair of pardon requests from people convicted of killing their partners. Each case tests his faith, the law and his own sense of what is fair.
Around the president are his daughter Dorotea, the justice minister and the prime minister. Everyone has an opinion, and each pulls him a different way. Paolo Sorrentino trades the spectacle of some of his other films for a quieter portrait of a man who thinks too much before he acts. Toni Servillo reunites with the director in the lead role.
