Quick recap

Jim Barnett, who runs a small detective agency in Paris, advertises free information. In practice he solves cases the police can't and always walks off with a cut of whatever was at stake. Inspector Béchoux, who needs his help, is torn between admiration and fury. There are eight short cases: missing jewels, inheritances, swindles, a crime at a château. Each ends with the mystery solved and Barnett a bit richer. Readers figure out who Barnett really is fast, and so does Béchoux, but he can't prove it.
