Quick recap

In Miami, Bond catches millionaire Auric Goldfinger cheating at cards and spends the night with his assistant, Jill Masterson, who turns up dead, painted gold. Bond tails Goldfinger to Switzerland in Q's Aston Martin DB5 but is captured and taken to the villain's Kentucky stud farm. There he learns of Operation Grand Slam: setting off an atomic device inside Fort Knox to make America's gold radioactive and send the value of Goldfinger's own hoard soaring. Bond persuades pilot Pussy Galore to swap the nerve gas for something harmless. In the vault he electrocutes henchman Oddjob with his own steel-rimmed hat, and the bomb is disarmed with seconds to spare. Goldfinger makes one last try on the plane and gets sucked out a window.

Hidden details

  1. Behind the scenesAn imaginary Fort Knox

The crew wasn't allowed inside the real Fort Knox, so Ken Adam pictured the vault as a cathedral of stacked gold. The fake bars looked so real that Pinewood posted a 24-hour guard on the set.

  2. Behind the scenesThe best-selling toy of 1964

The Aston Martin DB5's revolving plates and ejector seat came from crew suggestions; the seat was director Guy Hamilton's stepson's idea. Corgi's die-cast model became the best-selling toy of 1964.

  3. Behind the scenesGoldfinger's borrowed voice

Gert Fröbe spoke little English and learned his lines phonetically. Goldfinger's voice was fully redubbed by actor Michael Collins.
